In 2026, the Legend Distance returns to Bala for the first time since 2017 — and it’s ready to challenge and inspire like never before.

When Always Aim High Events brought triathlon back to Bala in 2024, Sprint and Standard athletes reignited the spirit of this iconic race. Now, it’s time to take things further. The Legend (70.3) is back, giving you the chance to test yourself over the ultimate middle-distance course in one of the UK’s most breathtaking settings.

Your race begins with a 1900m swim in the waters of Llyn Tegid, framed by the mighty Aran Fawddwy. You’ll then take on an 80km bike ride that weaves through the dramatic landscapes of Eryri, before a 21.1km run that will push you to your limits and reward you with an unforgettable finish line moment.

This is your chance to go further, dig deeper, and achieve something extraordinary. The Legend is waiting; will you rise to the challenge?

Llyn Tegid at the start of the Bala Triathlon

Route Description

The iconic Bala triathlon begins with a water start in the famous Llyn Tegid, with Aran Fawddwy providing a dramatic backdrop. After an out-and-back swim, you will head into transition to get ready for the bike section. Don’t let the mountainous scenery fool you as you head out of transition on the fast and flat bike route. The bike route follows the western shore of the lake, before cutting through the lowlands of southern Eryri (Snowdonia), turning, and heading back towards Bala. The run continues in a similar vein to the bike, a fast and flat 21km to finish a spectacular race. The perfect route for beginners or a great opportunity for a PB for experienced racers!

Minimum Age

In line with British Triathlon rules, you must be at least 18 years old to take part in this race.

Registration

You will need to attend registration to pick up your race pack. Registration will be open on both Saturday afternoon and Sunday morning - we will confirm specific times in your Final Instructions, which will be available on the website and via email 10 days prior to the race.

Wave Start Times

Wave start times are normally at approximately 0700hrs. Confirmation of the exact times will be sent to you in the Final Instructions, approximately 10 days before the event.

Waves are allocated using the estimated finish time on your entry.

You'll be able to find out which wave you're in online ahead of the race. Details of this will be emailed to you along with the Final Instructions.

Transition

Transition opens early on the morning of the event and will close approximately 30 minutes before the first wave starts. You may not enter transition for any reason after the allocated time. Confirmed timings will be detailed in your Final Instructions, which will be available on the website and via email 10 days before your race.

Transition will only be open for racking on the day of the event. It is not possible to leave your bike overnight.

Equipment left in Transition after it closes will be removed, and its security cannot be guaranteed.

Cut Off Times

In the interest of athlete safety and the safety of our volunteers on the course, strict cut-off times are in place.

You have a total of 1 hour and 10 minutes to complete your swim and exit transition.
You have a total of 4 hours and 10 minutes to complete your bike and exit transition.
You have a total of 2 hours and 30 minutes to complete your run.

Timings are subject to change. Confirmed timings will be detailed in your final instructions. These are emailed to athletes 10 days before the race, and they’ll also be available on our website below.

Prizes

We hold a prize giving ceremony after the racing, approximate timings will be detailed in the Final Instructions. However, it is a good idea to listen out for information on any updates that come in over the tannoy. Sometimes the ceremony may be delayed, and we wouldn't want you to miss out. We don't send out prizes after the event, so make sure you attend the ceremony and receive your big Welsh cheer!
