The Celtic Cup Comes to Llandudno: Scotland vs. Wales in a Historic Showdown
For the first time ever, Triathlon Scotland and Triathlon Cymru are joining forces to bring an electrifying national competition to North Wales — the inaugural Celtic Cup.
Bringing together their top age-group teams, each nation will field two open and two female athletes per age category to compete head-to-head for national glory. The setting? The stunning coastline of North Wales, home to the renowned Llandudno Triathlon. Hosted by Always Aim High Events, this race has become a highlight on the triathlon calendar, often serving as the season's final showdown for many athletes.
Competitors will start in the Irish Sea from Llandudno's North Shore for the swim leg before tackling the breathtaking closed-road bike section around the iconic Great Orme. The race concludes with a thrilling run along the Victorian promenade, where hundreds of spectators will gather to cheer on the athletes. Each participant will take on the standard distance triathlon, consisting of a 1500m swim, 35km bike ride, and 10km run.
Steve Paige, CEO of Triathlon Scotland, expressed his excitement: “ The Celtic Cup is an amazing opportunity for our athletes to represent Scotland at their age group in competition against Wales. I am delighted to be working with our partners at Welsh Triathlon and race organisers Always Aim High Events to bring this challenge to life.
There are not many opportunities to represent your country in sport and sing the anthem, it is such a privilege and honour, and I can’t wait to see the team toe the start line and compete for Scotland.
With the Welsh team competing on home turf, the question looms: will the home advantage give them the edge, or will Scotland rise to the occasion and claim victory?
Catherine Roberts, CEO of Welsh Triathlon, shared her enthusiasm: Competing on home turf in the stunning setting of Llandudno is an incredible opportunity to showcase the talent and dedication of our Welsh team. We are thrilled to collaborate with Triathlon Scotland and Always Aim High Events to bring this historic competition to life.
The spirit of camaraderie and fierce competition will undoubtedly make this event unforgettable. We look forward to seeing our athletes rise to the challenge and make Wales proud.
The Llandudno Triathlon will take place on Saturday, 4th October, and entries are now open for all who wish to take part. The Celtic Cup, however, is an invite-only event, promising a thrilling spectacle for athletes and spectators alike.
Who will emerge victorious in this historic clash of Celtic nations? All eyes turn to Llandudno to find out.
