Climbing for a Cause: One Man’s Journey to the Summit of Yr Wyddfa
This is the story of Ben Cox—an ordinary man taking on an extraordinary challenge. As he approaches his 50th birthday, Ben is pushing himself to the limits in the Black Diamond Yr Wyddfa | Snowdon24 event, raising vital funds for Cancer Research Wales in memory of his late father. This is a journey of endurance, personal transformation, and heartfelt purpose.
A Personal Challenge with Purpose
Ben’s main inspiration is his own physical and mental wellbeing. He’s come to see challenges like this not only as a way to stretch himself but as a powerful opportunity to help others—even those he can’t help directly.
He also draws deep motivation from his love for Wales—its rugged landscapes, warm people, and unique spirit. There’s no place he’d rather be putting himself to the test.
At the heart of Ben’s Snowdon24 journey is the memory of his father, who passed away from cancer. His dad remains a constant source of strength, especially in the toughest moments. “He is my inspiration up the mountain—and in life—when things are getting tough and my mind is telling me to stop,” Ben shares. “He’s missed by us all, every day.”
From Half-Marathon to 24-Hour Mountain Challenge
Ben’s fitness journey began three years ago with the Snowdonia Trail half-marathon event, that takes place on the same weekend as this one. At the time, he just wanted to prove to himself he could do it. That led to a full marathon the following year, and now, to the 24-hour test that is Snowdon24.
Over that time, he’s lost over 10kg, improved his physical strength, and found a more positive mental space. He keeps his training consistent and realistic—three steady endurance runs per week, plus two boxing sessions at Rings Boxing Club in Loughborough, whose support he deeply values.
“I’m not a super athlete,” Ben says. “I’m just an ordinary, humble person doing something that means a lot to me.”
Supporting Cancer Research Wales
Ben is proudly fundraising for Cancer Research Wales, the headline charity of the Snowdon24 event. He knows the devastating impact of cancer all too well, and he’s passionate about supporting research that can save lives and bring hope to families like his own.
The response from his circle has been overwhelmingly positive. While there were a few puzzled looks at first, people quickly rallied behind him—and behind the cause. “Most people want to help,” Ben says, “but they don’t always know how. Supporting someone doing something like this gives them that chance.”
Fundraising Tips
Ben offers simple but effective advice for anyone fundraising: start early, and don’t be afraid to ask. Reach out to your contacts—many of them will be eager to support you, especially for a cause like Cancer Research Wales. “The biggest support often comes at the start,” he says, “and then again when the event is close. Don’t be shy. Remind people why you’re doing this.”
