Yr Wyddfa|Snowdon24 Welcomes Cancer Research Wales as New Charity Partner

Published: 02.01.2025

In an inspiring partnership, Cancer Research Wales has been announced as the official charity partner for Yr Wyddfa | Snowdon24, a 24-hour running challenge that takes place on the highest mountain in Wales and England. The collaboration is set to shine a spotlight on the Welsh cancer research charity's vital work while encouraging participants to raise funds for cancer research conducted exclusively in Wales.

A Mountain of Challenges, A World of Impact

Yr Wyddfa | Snowdon24 invites runners to ascend and descend the iconic mountain as many times as possible within 24 hours. Starting and finishing in the picturesque village of Llanberis, participants follow the 15-kilometer Llanberis Path passing landmarks including Half Way House and Clogwyn Bridge before reaching the summit of Yr Wyddfa (1,085 meters above sea level) and looping back to the event village.

For solo runners this is the ultimate endurance challenge testing the limits of physical and mental stamina. The challenge can also be taken on as a pair or a team, taking turns to make ascents in a relay format - this is the perfect opportunity for a group of people to join together for 24 hours with every individual contributing to the team goal whether they make one ascent or ten! Cancer Research Wales’s involvement promises to bring greater attention to the event bringing people together in celebration, remembrance or simply hope to make a significant difference to the lives of people in Walesl.

Running for a Cause

A Personal Connection: Mike and Victoria’s Story

Cancer Research Wales’s partnership with a running event like the Yr Wyddfa | Snowdon24 takes on a deeply personal dimension with stories like that of Victoria Davies. A dedicated mother, runner, and supporter of cancer charities, Victoria battled stage 4 primary peritoneal cancer with remarkable courage. Despite undergoing numerous treatments, including chemotherapy and surgery, Victoria prioritised others and even raised over £2,000 for the Little Princess Trust while enduring her own illness.

Victoria’s five-year fight against cancer ended in 2022, but her family continues her mission to combat the disease. As her fiancé, Mike, explained, “We as her family want to help the battle against cancer in her name just as she did all she could whilst she was alive.”

Mike will be donating a place at another Welsh running event every year in Victoria’s memory to raise money for Cancer Research Wales and to raise awareness of the different kinds of cancers. "The Goldrush Route was one we ran regularly together as training runs and was her first race after completing her chemotherapy and recovering from the surgery she had undergone”, said Mike.

Joining the Movement

The partnership is a powerful step forward in uniting communities across Wales in the fight against cancer. Adam Fletcher, CEO of Cancer Research Wales, expressed his excitement for the collaboration:

“Cancer Research Wales is the Welsh cancer research charity, and we are delighted to be partnering with Camu i’r Copa/Always Aim High Events for the Black Diamond Yr Wyddfa /Snowdon24 2025.

“Our runners – through their fundraising, are helping us to unite Wales against cancer and push the boundaries of cancer research discoveries here in Wales.

“As the only charity wholly dedicated to funding cancer research in Wales for Wales, Cancer Research Wales supports the best cancer researchers and clinicians to make pioneering discoveries which will transform the lives of our friends, neighbours and family members.”

Whether as an individual or part of a team, participants in the Yr Wyddfa | Snowdon24 event can be part of something extraordinary. Together, they will not only conquer Wales’s highest peak but also contribute to lifesaving research that will benefit generations to come.
