Triathlon returns to Llandudno for 2022

Published: 18.11.2021

North Wales’s leading sports events company Always Aim High Events have recently announced that they will be hosting the 2022 Llandudno Triathlon.

The event had been previously run by another company that last saw the Triathlon take place in 2017. Since then, there have been calls from the Triathlon community to bring this great event back to the seaside town. Always Aim High Events already run some of the finest Triathlon’s in the UK including their iconic Cardiff City Triathlon. The company also successfully host many running and cycle events which all showcase the beautiful locations of Wales.

The event will take place at the end of the Triathlon season on Sunday 25th September and is hoping to attract over 2000 participants and spectators with a Sprint as well as a Standard distance available.

It has also been confirmed the Sprint distance will be the finale of the Welsh Triathlon Championships, a collaboration of televised sprint and standard triathlon events which showcases Wales as the natural home of Triathlon and multisport.

Gareth Evans, Head of Development at Welsh Triathlon said “We’re delighted to see the resurrection of the Llandudno triathlon under the guidance of Always Aim High Events. It's fantastic to have another racing opportunity in North Wales in an iconic location. With previous Super Series finales being held at Newborough as part of the Sandman delivery, it's great for the series to see the awards being decided at a new location. I’m sure the members of the Triathlon community across the whole of Wales are as excited as we are to visit Llandudno next September”

The course will see athletes swimming under the watchful eye of the iconic Victorian pier, before taking them along a closed-road bike route around Marine Drive, the scenic road leading you around Llandudno's Great Orme.

Completing the event, the run will take participants along the promenade which provides a great atmosphere, with spectators lining the route, providing the same warm Welsh welcome you can expect at all Always Aim High Events, right through to the finish line.

Tim Lloyd director at Always Aim High Events said “We are thrilled to be bringing this event to Llandudno, the town is a perfect backdrop for a Triathlon with a sea swim and stunning bike and run routes which showcase this beautiful area. Llandudno also provides our participants and spectators with ample facilities to enjoy pre and post-race, with so many great attractions and hospitality venues for them to discover”

Tim continued “Like all of our events, we really aim to showcase the location through sport. Celebrating the culture, history and language is really important to us and is crucial in our continued drive in supporting the local economy and local communities. Llandudno will be no exception and we can’t wait to show our participants all that it has to offer”

Councillor Louise Emery, Cabinet Member for Economic Development and Leisure, and the Deputy Leader said “We’re pleased Always Aim High Events have chosen Conwy County to host their Welsh Super Series event, which contributes to our ambitions as set out in our Event Strategy 2018-2022 to support our economy, raise our profile and offer a dynamic place to live, work and visit.”
