A Spectacular Start to the Season at the Inaugural Eirias Triathlon

The Eirias Triathlon & Duathlon kicked off in exhilarating style this weekend, marking the start of our season in the stunning new location of Colwyn Bay. A week of sunshine leading up to the event held strong, blessing race day with clear blue skies and sunshine. It was a brilliant backdrop for the season opener and the prestigious setting for the Welsh Triathlon National Duathlon Championships.

At the crack of dawn, both the Triathlon and Duathlon races launched at 7am sharp, drawing in a flurry of eager participants.

The Duathlon, which served as the stage for the Welsh Triathlon national championships, boasted a robust turnout. Just under 100 athletes toed the start line at the impressive Stadiwm CSM track.

The Duathlete's headed out, conquering a 2.2k run, a 17k closed road bike course before culminating in a thrilling 5k run finale leading to the track finish.

The racing action kicked off with the duathlon, where GOG Triathlon’s Simon Cole took an early lead heading out onto the first run. By the end of the bike leg, however, Joe Holt had managed to overtake Cole and maintained his advantage during the second run, crossing the finish line to take an impressive win in 51:52. Cole secured second place, finishing less than a minute later before Llywelyn Edwards delivered a stellar performance to claim third.

In the female duathlon race, it was Emily Hanlon of GOG Triathlon who led from the outset, completing her first run in 8:40. She successfully held her lead through the bike and second run, finishing as the clear winner in 58:29 — the only female athlete to break the one-hour barrier. Beth Hopkins put in a brilliant effort to finish second in 1:01, with Ffion Mulford rounding out the podium in third with a time of 1:03. A special mention goes to Katie Evans of Celtic Tri, who, having just celebrated her 15th birthday the day before, finished in an impressive fourth place and won the U20 category.

The triathlon featured a staggered start in the Colwyn Bay Swimming Pool before athletes transitioned to their bikes for the same course as the duathletes, finishing with a run through the park and a final lap around the running track.

In the open triathlon race, Nathan Walker recorded the fastest swim of the day in 5:05. However, it was Zack Davies of M&K Tri and Andrew Jones, of GOG Triathlon, who made up ground on the bike. Despite a fall during the bike section, Huw Jack Brassington recovered superbly, recording the fastest run of the day at 16:23 and pushing into the top three. In a thrilling finish, Zack Davies just edged out Andrew Jones to take the win in 53:50, with Andrew finishing second in 54:35 and Huw Brassington completing the podium in 54:50.

In the female triathlon category, Ciara Cust of Welsh Triathlon Academy started with a strong swim of 5:38 and held her lead throughout the bike and run segments, smashing the one-hour mark to take the win in 58:57. Neisha Roberts of GOG Triathlon Club finished second in 1:02:12, and Always Aim High Events regular Amy Edwards put in a brilliant performance to take third in 1:04:11.

Adding to the excitement, and following the main racing, the first-ever Eirias Junior Swim-Bike-Run event took place. Local children had the chance to experience all three elements of a triathlon, using the pool and running track. The event, made possible by the support of Colwyn Bay Town Council and the local GOG Triathlon Club coaches, was a huge success, with over 160 children participating. It was fantastic to see the future generation of triathletes enjoying themselves, and the feedback from parents and participants was overwhelmingly positive.

Always Aim High Events Director Tim Lloyd expressed, "Although we were sad not to return to our usual triathlon season opener at Harlech, our brand-new location in Colwyn Bay did not disappoint. We were blessed with beautiful sunshine and a brilliant new course. It was fabulous to once again host the National Duathlon Championships — a big thank you to Welsh Triathlon for trusting us to deliver this fantastic event.

Alongside some incredible elite racing, we were thrilled to welcome lots of beginners joining us on this great new course, showing the sport continues to grow.

A real highlight of the day was the junior event. It was truly inspiring to see so many children come along, cycling and running around the track with such energy. We are extremely grateful to GOG Triathlon Club for their amazing support in making this possible.

As always, a huge thank you must go to our incredible volunteers. Their dedication and hard work are instrumental in delivering such exceptional races."
