Step into the mountains with the Ogwen 15km, the perfect introduction to Mountain Running in Eryri. This stunning loop from Plas y Brenin takes you high over Gallt yr Ogof and along the sweeping ridge of Cefn y Capel, before descending back into the heart of the Ogwen Valley.

With nearly 700m of elevation packed into 15km of rugged trails, including the 805m summit of Foel Goch, this race delivers a true mountain running experience without the full ultra-distance commitment. Expect technical terrain, exhilarating ridge running, and panoramic views across the Carneddau and beyond.

Route Description

1. Start – Plas y Brenin to Gallt yr Ogof ascent
The route launches with a steady rolling climb, inviting you into off-road terrain. The 4km sustained scree ascent over Gallt yr Ogof climbs steadily, revealing increasingly commanding views over the valley as you gain height. Although gradients may steepen, the terrain remains runnable for those with good mountain fitness.

2. Ridge traverse and descent toward Cefn y Capel
After cresting Gallt yr Ogof, enjoy a ridge traverse rich with elevated views across Capel Curig and the Carneddau skyline. Turning toward Cefn y Capel, the route undulates with rewarding ridge running before easing into a descending slope—keep alert for technical footwork as terrain shifts.

3. Return leg into the Ogwen Valley
Completing the loop, the terrain steadily transitions back into the Ogwen Valley’s gentler gradients via some grassy, often wet hillside. The final stretch retraces valley trails toward Plas y Brenin, where your finish is framed by surrounding peaks; a satisfying conclusion to a scenic and physically engaging mountain route.

Age

You must be at least 17 years old to take part in this race.

Registration

Your bib (race number) will need to be collected from registration on the morning of the race. Registration can be found within the Plas y Brenin building*. You will be able to find the event's Final Instructions on the website 10 days prior to the race.

*There will be an information desk in this location for any inquiries.

Start Time

The 15K usually starts at 9:30, though this is subject to change. The race start time will be confirmed in your Final Instructions, which are available to view on the website 10 days before the race.

Feed Station

There is one aid station on the 15K route. Water, HIGH5 energy drinks and gels will be available at 4.5k.

Please note that our races are cupless, meaning you must provide a reusable water bottle or race cup to fill at the feed stations. Race cups are available at the event shop in the event village at heavily discounted prices.

Cut Off Times

In the interest of athlete safety and the safety of our volunteers on the course there will be strict cut off times in place. The finish line timing will end 3 hours after the race starts. A confirmation of specific cut off times will be detailed in your Final Instructions which will be available on the website 10 days prior to the race.

Prizes

We hold a prize-giving ceremony after the race; approximate timings will be detailed in the Final Instructions, but it is a good idea to listen out for any updates over the tannoy. Sometimes the ceremony may be delayed, and we wouldn't want you to miss out. We don't send out prizes after the event, so make sure you attend the ceremony and receive your big Welsh cheer!
