Route Description
Starting and finishing at Plas y Brenin, the route eases you in with a few fast and flat miles along the Eryri Slate Trail. Don’t be lulled into comfort though; this is just the approach to the real mountain running.
The challenge begins with the lung-busting ascent of Pen yr Ole Wen (978m). Over just 2 miles, you’ll gain around 700m of elevation, making it one of the toughest climbs of the day. The route includes a short section of easy scrambling—nothing overly technical, but enough to keep hands engaged as you pull yourself skyward. A good level of mountain fitness is essential here, and the reward (weather permitting!) is a majestic view across to Tryfan.
From here, the course follows the Carneddau skyline, a rollercoaster of ascents and runnable ridges over Carnedd Fach (960m), Carnedd Dafydd (1044m) and Carnedd Llewelyn (1064m). The terrain is mostly runnable, but the descent from the south-east of Llewelyn demands caution. This section includes a short, straightforward scramble down—not overly technical, but requiring steady footwork and focus.
The final big climb takes you up Pen yr Helgi Ddu, another ascent with some easy scrambling before you’re rewarded with sweeping views of the Glyderau range, Tryfan, and Cwm Llugwy.
The last act is pure joy: a fast, grassy descent, perfect for downhill specialists to open up their stride. A few final miles on the Slate Trail guide you back to Plas y Brenin, finishing where you started—tired, exhilarated, and with a smile that says you’ve just conquered one of Eryri’s finest mountain challenges.
