2024 Race Report

What a great turn out for the third edition of the 2024 Weston Park Triathlon & Duathlon on a beautiful May Sunday! Over 250 athletes raced through the stunning Weston Park, enjoying the great weather and fantastic atmosphere.

We were blessed with amazing weather conditions once again for the 2024 edition of the Weston Park Triathlon & Duathlon, the event's third year.

Beginning at 9am, the event started with the Standard Triathlon. The swim was an in-water start in the beautiful Weston Park Lake. For most this was the first competitive open water swims of the season, and with a recorded morning temperature of 20.1 degrees and a warm air temperature, the conditions were good.

The Standard distance athletes complete two laps of the 750m swim course, before making their way to the new transition location and onto two laps of the new 19km bike course. The run course covers two laps of the varied 5km course, traversing the open parkland, and the beautiful woodland trails, passing the stunning Temple Pool, culminating in the lively event village finish.

Following on at 10am, the Sprint distance triathlon & duathlon took to the shorter courses. The swimmers completed a single 750m loop of the lake followed by 4 laps of a 6km bike course and 2 laps of off-road running. Starting under the finish line arch, the duathletes headed out on the 1st 2.5k run, before joining the triathletes on the 4 lap bike course and final 9.6km run.

In the Female Standard it was Emma Woods and Emily Moran who left the water in 1st place, but the win was not to be for them. Georgia Hileard reeled in Emily on the bike course, with Emma falling back in the rankings. A fast run from Charlotte Spencer fixed the final results, with Georgia taking 1st place in 2:32:03, Charlotte crossing the line in 2nd place in 2:34:16 and Emily taking 3rd in 2:36:06.

In the Open Standard Triathlon, it was Christopher Ashford of Solihull Triathlon Club who left the water in second position who's bike and ultimately run performance that earned him the win in 2:04:52. Despite overtaking Christopher on the bike course, Matt Richards ultimately took 3rd place in 2:09:03, with a strong bike and run performance from Elliot Brooks earning him 2nd in 2:08:12.

Following on from the Standard distance triathlon, the sprint distance triathlon & duathlon began at 10am. With the swimmers beginning their 750m swim, the duathletes headed out onto their first run with Brad Roeton taking the lead, and Andrew Rogers and Ian Dickerson hot on his heels in the open race. Brad held his lead on the bike, and went on to take the win in a brilliant 1:11:08, despite a strong final run performance from 2nd place Ian Dickerson, finishing in 1:12:25 and third placed Andrew Rogers, who crossed the line in 1:13:39.

In the female Sprint duathlon it was last year's second placed athlete Beth Jones of Swansea Vale Tri Club who dominated the race throughout completing run one in 11:57, the bike in 44.37 to go on to take the win in the female race in an impressive 1:16:20. Jamie Dickerson of Lincsquad crossed the line to take second place in 1:25:30 followed by Deanna Mammatt of Hereford Triathlon Club in 1:28:56.

In the Sprint Triathlon, the Female race saw Nicki Woolley comfortably out of the water first, but she was hunted down by Milly Garbet and Ella Parry in the bike course, and ultimately Sally Wilding too on the run course, leaving the final results as Milly taking 1st place in 1:25:00, Ella 2nd in 1:28:06 and Sally claiming 3rd in 1:28:28.

The Open category Sprint race podium was fought out amongst the three fastest swimmers, but it was Jonathan Biddle who clawed back a disadvantage coming out of the water to take 1st place in 1:17:12, largely due to a very strong run, seeing Martin Powell drop to second place with a finish time of 1:17:43. The fastest swimmer in the race, Oliver Ripley of Full on Tri, claimed third in 1:19:13.

Always Aim High Events Director Tim Lloyd said ‘It has been another great weekend of racing at Weston Park this year, the venue is perfect for Triathlon & Duathlon racing. It was great to see so many join us on what was one of their first triathlons of the season with a great mixture of seasoned athletes as well as beginners joining us for their first introduction to the sport.

As always we would like to thank our amazing marshals and volunteers, many of who travelled a distance to be with us at Weston Park. We couldn’t put on such fantastic races without them. As well as the fabulous team at Weston Park our race sponsors and all the spectators that supported the athletes around the course.
