Slateman 2025 Ultra (140.6) Full Distance

Slateman Ultra 140.6 Full Distance Triathlon Logo

Often referred to as '140.6', 'Full Distance', or 'Iron Distance', our ultra triathlon delivers much more than just miles. The Slateman Ultra Triathlon will be the UK's newest full-distance adventure triathlon, with over 2600m of elevation on the bike route and off-road trail running in the UNESCO World Heritage Dinorwig Quarries.

It covers some of North Wales's most beautiful and challenging terrain, including an ascent of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) for those who can make the cut-off.

The Slateman Ultra Triathlon is the Always Aim High Event's first full-distance event, and we can't think of a better stage for it than Llanberis. Immersed in the beauty and history of Eryri (Snowdonia), you will race in the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Dinorwig Slate Quarries, ride the epic mountain roads of Eryri, all under the watchful eye of England & Wales' highest peak, Yr Wyddfa.

With your swim in the beautiful Llyn Padarn, a challenging bike route enjoying Eryri's valleys and passes, and two different finish options for your run, this is a truly epic adventure!

Route Description

The Slateman Ultra route takes in some of the most iconic views in North Wales and is a course that requires a high level of fitness to complete.

The race begins with a 2.4-mile swim in Llyn Padarn in the shadow of Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon) surrounded by the history of Slate Mining in the Welsh hills before heading to your bike.

Begin the cycle by climbing up the famous Llanberis Pass to reach Pen y Pass alongside Yr Wyddfa, before turning left and heading towards Capel Curig, the home of the National Outdoor Centre, Plas y Brenin. Passing Llyn Mymbyr and Moel Siabod the views on this section are not to be missed! At Capel Curig, you’ll turn left again and cycle towards Bethesda going through the mountainous paradise of the Ogwen Valley. You pass many of Wales' most famous and iconic peaks; Tryfan, Glyder Fach and Fawr, and the start of the Carneddau mountain range. Before getting into Bethesda proper, you’ll turn left towards Tregarth and make your way along the less hilly, but still challenging lower flanks. As you head into Llanrug, the route joins the Standard triathlon route and circles towards Y Waenfawr. As you flow around the course towards Beddgelert, keep an eye out on your left because you’re circumnavigating Yr Wyddfa! Once you’re through the beautiful, quaint village of Beddgelert, you’ve got another challenge to come; you must cycle up the narrow and winding Nant Gwynant Pass and return to the top of Pen y Pass. Make sure you take in some of the most spectacular views in the country before you descend back to Llanberis and transition. The sting in the tail; when you get back to Llanberis, you turn around and do it all again!

The Slateman Ultra run is a lap-based course. The run starts relatively easy but no less beautifully than the rest of the route taking in the historic Dolbadarn Castle; as you run past Llyn Peris at the foot of the Dinorwic Slate Quarry, don’t lose your nerve when you see what is to come. A 2km climb up the zig zags through the quarry takes your legs and your breath away, especially when you look around at where you are. Carrying on through this most awesome man-altered landscape for another 1.5km you then come to the descent into the forest. Heading then towards Fachwen and a short section of road, followed by a steep descent once more into the trees. You will then make your way along the beautiful trails of Parc Padarn and past the Old Quarry Hospital as you descend to the lap point to do it all again!

Complete three loops before 6:30pm and you will be able to take on the Mynydd final run section, ascending Yr Wyddfa (Snowdon). Otherwise, you will be able to aim for a Chwarel finish, by completing four loops of the Dinorwig Quarry course. Anyone completing at least 2 loops will receive a Llechan finisher award.
